Plasterboard Sizes UK: Standard Dimensions Guide

Quick summary

Standard UK plasterboard sizes are 1200mm x 2400mm and 1200mm x 3000mm. Common thicknesses are 9.5mm, 12.5mm, and 15mm. A 12.5mm thick 2400mm sheet weighs 29kg and covers 2.88m². Tapered edge boards are used for jointing, square edge for direct decoration or overlaying.

Standard plasterboard sheet sizes

UK plasterboard is sold in metric sheet sizes. The two most common dimensions are:

  • 1200mm x 2400mm (8ft x 4ft): Standard size. Covers 2.88m² per sheet. Suits typical UK ceiling heights of 2.4m. Widely stocked by all merchants and DIY sheds.
  • 1200mm x 3000mm (10ft x 4ft): Longer sheet for taller rooms or to reduce horizontal joints. Covers 3.6m² per sheet. Heavier and harder to manoeuvre. Common in new builds with 2.7m+ ceilings.

Less common sizes include 900mm x 1800mm (small repairs or tight access), 1200mm x 1800mm, and 1200mm x 2700mm. These are stocked by specialists or available to order. Most builders merchants carry only the two standard sizes.

Plasterboard thickness options

Plasterboard thickness affects strength, soundproofing, and fire resistance. Three standard thicknesses:

9.5mm plasterboard

Used for lightweight partition walls (timber stud at 400mm centres), overlaying existing damaged plasterboard, or curved walls. Not suitable for ceilings unless on very close centres (300mm). Lighter and cheaper than 12.5mm. Less sound insulation. Less impact-resistant.

12.5mm plasterboard (most common)

Standard thickness for walls and ceilings. Suitable for timber studs at 400mm or 600mm centres. Good balance of strength, weight, and cost. Provides 30 minutes fire resistance when specified as fire-rated board. Most versatile thickness.

15mm plasterboard

Used where extra strength, soundproofing, or fire resistance is needed. Suitable for ceilings on joists at 600mm centres. Common in commercial buildings or party walls. Heavier (34kg for a 2400mm sheet). More expensive. Better acoustic performance.

Specialist thicknesses like 19mm exist for heavy-duty commercial use but are rare in domestic projects.

Weight per sheet

Plasterboard weight varies by thickness and sheet size. For a standard 1200mm x 2400mm sheet:

Thickness Weight (2400mm sheet) Weight (3000mm sheet)
9.5mm 22kg 27kg
12.5mm 29kg 36kg
15mm 34kg 43kg

Foil-backed insulated boards, acoustic boards, and fire-resistant boards weigh slightly more due to additives or backing materials. Always lift plasterboard with two people for 12.5mm and thicker sheets. Use a board lifter or hoist for ceiling work.

Coverage and how many sheets you need

To calculate sheets needed, measure the total wall or ceiling area in m², then divide by the coverage per sheet.

  • 1200mm x 2400mm sheet: Covers 2.88m²
  • 1200mm x 3000mm sheet: Covers 3.6m²

Example calculation

Room with four walls, each 4m long x 2.4m high. Total area = 4 x (4 x 2.4) = 38.4m². Using 2400mm sheets: 38.4 ÷ 2.88 = 13.3 sheets. Round up to 14 sheets. Add 10% for wastage = 15 sheets total.

For ceilings, measure length x width. A 4m x 3.5m ceiling is 14m². Using 2400mm sheets: 14 ÷ 2.88 = 4.86 sheets. Round up to 5 sheets, plus 10% = 6 sheets.

Always buy extra for cutting around windows, doors, and fittings. Offcuts are useful for small repairs later.

Tapered edge vs square edge plasterboard

Tapered edge (TE)

Long edges are tapered (recessed) by 2-3mm. When two boards meet, the taper creates a shallow channel. You fill this with jointing compound and tape, then feather it flat. The result is an invisible joint ready for decoration. Use tapered edge for walls and ceilings that will be painted or wallpapered directly without skim plastering.

Square edge (SE)

All four edges are cut square with no taper. Joints are flush. Use square edge when you intend to skim the entire surface with finishing plaster (the plaster hides the joints). Also used for overlaying existing boards or where you will tape and fill joints then skim over the top.

Which to choose?

Tapered edge if you are taping, filling, and decorating directly. Square edge if you are skimming the whole surface with plaster. Most UK board sold is tapered edge because direct decoration is faster and cheaper than full skim plastering.

Specialty plasterboard sizes

Some plasterboard types come in non-standard sizes:

  • Small format boards (900mm x 1800mm): For repairs, loft conversions with restricted access, or curved walls. Easier to handle but more joints to fill.
  • Moisture-resistant board: Same sizes as standard board. Identified by green or blue face paper.
  • Acoustic board: Usually 1200mm x 2400mm or 2700mm. Denser and heavier (higher mass improves soundproofing).
  • Insulated plasterboard: Standard widths (1200mm) but lengths vary (2400mm, 2700mm, 3000mm). Thickness includes insulation layer (total 30-100mm depending on insulation depth).

Buying and transport tips

Where to buy

Builders merchants (Jewson, Travis Perkins, Selco) stock the widest range of sizes and types. DIY sheds (B&Q, Wickes) stock 1200mm x 2400mm in 9.5mm and 12.5mm only. Plasterboard specialists (British Gypsum depots) stock everything including long lengths and specialty boards.

Delivery vs collection

Plasterboard is heavy and awkward. Merchants deliver for a fee (typically £30-60). Essential for large orders or if you do not have a van. For small jobs (1-5 sheets), collection in a long-wheelbase van or with roof bars is feasible. Tie sheets securely and drive carefully (they are brittle and will snap on rough roads).

Storage on site

Store plasterboard flat on a level surface, never on edge. Keep it dry (damp board sags and the paper facing delaminates). Stack no more than 10 sheets high or the bottom sheets will crush. Cover with polythene if storing in an unheated or damp building.

Cost guide

Prices vary by thickness, type, and supplier. As of 2026:

  • Standard 12.5mm tapered edge (1200 x 2400mm): £6-8 per sheet
  • 9.5mm board: £5-7 per sheet
  • 15mm board: £8-10 per sheet
  • Moisture-resistant board: £8-11 per sheet (12.5mm)
  • Acoustic board: £12-18 per sheet (12.5mm high-density)
  • Fire-resistant board: £9-12 per sheet (12.5mm)

Bulk discounts apply for orders over 50 sheets. Trade customers get better pricing than retail. DIY sheds are typically 10-20% more expensive than merchants.
